3 feet below grade provide
thermal mass
heat storage. Straw bales insulate front wall below glazing. |
Steel rebar and welded wire mesh
provide the structural elements held together by 5" of urethane foam.
Protective covering is left on glazing until foam and paint is applied.
Paint is to protect foam against ultra-violet. |

![]() Sealing of glazing over vinyl rain gutter, above plastered straw bales. |
Used aluminum pop cans set in mortar are
used to fill in areas above the straw bales in the wall. Braces are
used inside and out to stabilize the wall until stucco can be applied.
Roof is 40 mil EDPM rubber pond liner. |
Standard

12" sona tube for solarpowered vent fan recycled from a junk car. |
Nearing
completion. Planting benches inside need to be finished in time
for use in the spring of 2003. |
Inside of
greenhouse painted to help the
urethane foam to resist ultra-violet from sunlight ... also makes the inside
much brighter and cheery. |
April
15, 2003 ... a couple of pictures of the new greenhouse in use. |
| When plants are large enough they are transplanted from the cups to the grow beds in the garden area after the threat of spring frost has passed The greenhouse will be used for crops like lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, etc. during the late fall and early winter. The greenhouse can also be used for winter storage of squash, onions, etc. | ![]() ![]() |

| For
extremely cold nights we have added a wood stove for soil temperature
stabilization, of the soil in the raised bed growing area which we
added down the center. This raised bed is used for growing "out of
season" vegetables and worm production. As a side note ... when we built this greenhouse in 2003 our out of pocket cost for materials was in the $4.00 per square foot range. That's pretty economical for a well insulated building. |
